What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A Complete Guide for Businesses
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is about making your content easy to understand, extract and trust. Here is what it means, what is proven, and how to start.
When someone asks a question, they increasingly get an answer rather than a list of links: a featured snippet, an AI summary at the top of Google, a spoken reply from an assistant, or a ChatGPT response with a few cited sources. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content easy for those systems to understand, extract and attribute.
This guide explains what AEO is, what is actually known about it, what is speculation, and what a business can do this quarter. It makes no promise that any system will cite you. Nobody can.
What AEO means in plain English
SEO asks: "Can this page rank for the query?" AEO adds a second question: "If a system wanted to answer this query using my page, could it find a clear, correct, trustworthy answer on it?"
That second question changes how you write and structure content, but not what makes a site good. The habits are familiar: answer the question directly, be specific, show who is behind the content, back claims with sources, keep the site crawlable.
Which "answer engines" are we talking about?
| Type | Example | How content is used |
|---|---|---|
| Featured snippets | The highlighted answer box in Google | A passage extracted from one page, with a link |
| AI features in search | Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | A generated summary with links to supporting pages |
| AI assistants with web search | ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot | A generated answer, often with cited sources |
| Voice assistants | Phone and smart speaker assistants | A short spoken answer, sometimes from a snippet |
They differ in sources, behaviour and policy, and they change often.
What Google says
Google's documentation on AI features in Search says that the same foundational SEO practices apply, and that no additional requirements exist to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet. It does not describe special markup, files or formats that increase your chances.
That is useful, because it removes a lot of noise. If someone sells a secret technique, check it against what the platform itself says.
What AEO is not
- Not a replacement for SEO. If your pages cannot be crawled and indexed, nothing else matters.
- Not a schema trick. Structured data helps systems interpret a page, but it is not a documented route to citations.
- Not a guarantee. Eligibility is not selection.
- Not an excuse for mass-produced AI content. Scaled, low-value pages are a spam risk.
A practical AEO plan
- Make sure key pages are indexed and snippet-eligible. Check URL Inspection in Search Console and look for noindex or restrictive snippet settings.
- Collect real questions. Sales calls, support emails, review sites and search suggestions are better sources than guesswork.
- Answer first. Under a heading phrased as the question, put a one- to two-sentence direct answer. Then add detail and nuance.
- Be specific. "Costs between 60 and 90 dollars depending on X" beats "affordable pricing".
- Show your credentials. Name the author, their role and why they are qualified. Show when the page was last updated.
- Cite sources. Link to primary documentation for factual claims.
- Add truthful structured data. Organization, Article, BreadcrumbList and similar types where they match visible content.
- Keep information consistent. The same business name, services and facts everywhere.
- Earn mentions. Original data, guides and tools that others reference.
Example: rewriting one section
Before: Heading "Our approach to pricing". Three sentences about philosophy, then a mention that sessions cost between 60 and 90 dollars.
After: Heading "How much does a one-hour session cost?" First sentence: "A one-hour session costs between 60 and 90 dollars depending on the practitioner and whether it is in person or online." Then explain what affects the price and what is included.
The second version is better for skimmers, easier to quote accurately, and still carries the nuance.
How to measure AEO
You can measure readiness and surrounding signals reliably; direct AI citations only approximately.
- Readiness: an AEO analysis that scores structured data, FAQ coverage, question headings, authorship and trust signals over time.
- Search performance: impressions, clicks and queries in Search Console.
- Brand footprint: linked and unlinked mentions.
- Spot checks: a fixed list of 10 to 20 customer questions asked periodically in the AI products your customers use, recording whether you are mentioned and which sources are cited.

Common mistakes
- Adding FAQ schema everywhere in the hope of citations.
- Treating llms.txt as required (it is a community proposal).
- Writing for imagined machines instead of real readers.
- Publishing unreviewed AI drafts.
- Ignoring technical SEO.
Why answer engines changed the question
For two decades, optimising meant earning a click. Answer engines add a second outcome: your content can inform an answer without a click, or earn a citation that sends a smaller, more qualified stream of visitors. That changes what you measure. Impressions and brand recall matter more than before, and the quality of the click matters more than the quantity.
This is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to make each page worth citing and worth clicking: specific, current, sourced and clearly credited to someone accountable.
A short glossary
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Featured snippet | A highlighted excerpt from a page shown above ordinary results |
| AI Overview | A generated summary in Google Search with links to supporting pages |
| Citation | A link or reference to a source used in a generated answer |
| Entity | A distinct thing such as a business, person, product or place that systems try to identify consistently |
| Structured data | Machine-readable markup that describes what is on a page |
| E-E-A-T | Google's quality framework: experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness |
Ten questions to ask of any page
- What single question does this page answer?
- Is the answer in the first two sentences?
- Are the numbers and conditions specific?
- Who wrote it, and why are they qualified?
- When was it last updated?
- Which sources back the claims?
- Is the page indexable and snippet-eligible?
- Does structured data match what is visible?
- Are business facts consistent with our profiles?
- Would a customer find the next obvious question answered?
Score your key pages and fix the lowest first.
What a good AEO page looks like
Imagine a plumber's page for "how much does it cost to replace a boiler?". It opens with a direct range and what drives the price, shows a table of typical jobs and conditions, lists what is included, names the Gas Safe registered engineer who reviewed it, shows the date, links the official guidance it relies on, and ends with an FAQ about warranties and timelines. Nothing exotic. Everything verifiable.
Where AEO fits in your wider marketing
AEO supports, and does not replace, your other channels. Clear answers help paid landing pages convert, strengthen email and sales content, and give PR a credible base to link to. Treat it as a quality standard for all customer-facing content.
