What AEO means
Traditional SEO optimises for a list of links: your page should rank high for a query. Answer engines change what the user sees. Instead of ten links, the user may see a short answer composed from one or more sources, with citations or links to the sources used.
AEO therefore adds a question to the SEO question. Not only "can this page rank?" but also "can a system lift a clear, accurate answer from this page, and does it have reason to trust it?"
The practical result is a set of editorial and technical habits:
- Answer the question directly near the top of the relevant section.
- Phrase headings the way people ask.
- Show who wrote the content and why they are qualified.
- Back factual claims with sources.
- Mark up content with structured data where it genuinely fits.
- Keep the site crawlable and the information consistent.
None of these is new. What is new is the emphasis on extractability: could a person or machine quote this section on its own and still be right?
How answer engines work, at a high level
Different products work differently and change often, so treat the following as a simplified picture rather than a specification.
Retrieval. Many AI answer experiences first retrieve relevant documents from a search index (or a set of indexes), then generate an answer based on those documents. This is why being crawlable and indexed matters: a page that is not in the index cannot be retrieved.
Generation. A language model composes an answer from the retrieved text. It may paraphrase, combine several sources or quote.
Attribution. Some products show links or citations to sources. Which sources are shown, and how many, varies by product and query.
Google's position. Google states that its AI features in Search (such as AI Overviews) use the same foundational systems, that the best practices for SEO remain relevant, and that no special optimisation is required. To be shown as a supporting link, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.
Beyond this, detailed ranking or selection factors for AI answers are not published. Be sceptical of anyone who claims to know them.
What nobody can promise
No tool, agency or schema type can guarantee that you will be cited by Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini. You can improve eligibility, clarity and trust; selection is up to the product.
How AEO differs from traditional SEO
They overlap heavily. The differences are mostly of emphasis.
| Aspect | Traditional SEO | AEO emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page for a query | Be the clear, trustworthy source an answer is built from |
| Content shape | Comprehensive pages targeting keywords | Direct answers within comprehensive pages; question-led headings |
| Success metric | Rank, clicks, traffic | Rank and clicks, plus mentions and citations where observable |
| Trust | Links, reputation, quality signals | Same, with visible authorship, sources and consistency |
| Technical | Crawl, index, speed, structure | Same; structured data where it matches visible content |
What helps: a practical checklist
Make the site eligible
- Allow crawling of pages you want surfaced and check that they are indexable (no accidental noindex or robots block).
- Do not block search crawlers from important content. If you want to appear in a particular AI product's search results, check that product's published crawler documentation and allow the relevant crawler.
- Do not apply snippet restrictions (nosnippet or a very low max-snippet) to pages you want quoted.
Make the answer clear
- Put a concise, direct answer at the top of each relevant section.
- Use headings phrased as the question.
- Use lists, tables and steps where they genuinely clarify.
- Define terms once, clearly.
Make the source trustworthy
- Name the author and their credentials.
- Show when content was last updated, and keep it current.
- Cite authoritative sources for facts.
- Keep information consistent across your site and profiles (business name, address, services).
Use structured data honestly
- Add Organization, Article, BreadcrumbList and other types that match visible content.
- Follow Google's structured data guidelines. Structured data helps machines interpret a page; it does not guarantee a feature or a citation.
Build real-world signals
- Earn mentions and links from relevant, reputable sites.
- Keep your business profiles accurate.
How Bizsenti AutoSEO's AEO analysis helps
The AEO analysis crawls your homepage and standard supporting pages (About, FAQ, Contact, Blog), extracts the signals above (structured data types, FAQ content, question headings, direct-answer patterns, author and trust signals), and scores your readiness with issues, recommendations and opportunities. It can also generate draft FAQ and answer content to fill gaps.
Use it to find the cheapest improvements, track change over time, and report on progress. Remember that its scores are heuristics: the weights are Bizsenti's own, not published ranking factors. See the AEO analysis tool page for details and the AI visibility tracker page for what can and cannot be measured.
A worked example: rewriting one section
Before. Heading: "Our approach to pricing". The section opens with three sentences about the company's philosophy before eventually mentioning that sessions cost between 60 and 90 dollars.
After. Heading: "How much does a one-hour session cost?" The first sentence: "A one-hour session costs between 60 and 90 dollars depending on the practitioner and whether it is in person or online." The next paragraphs explain what affects the price, discounts, and what is included.
The second version is better for readers skimming, easier for any system to quote accurately, and still carries the nuance. It uses no tricks.
How to measure AEO progress
Measure in layers.
- Readiness: AEO analysis scores and issues over time.
- Visibility in search: rankings, impressions and clicks (rank tracker, Search Console).
- Brand footprint: unlinked and linked brand mentions across the web.
- Direct observation: a fixed set of customer questions, asked periodically in the AI products your customers use, recording mentions and cited sources.
Avoid treating any single AI answer as evidence; responses vary.
Common mistakes and misconceptions
- "FAQ schema gets you into AI answers." It does not. Google restricts FAQ rich results to certain authoritative sites, and no AI product has said that FAQ markup guarantees citation.
- "You need llms.txt." It is a proposal for a convention; it is not a requirement for Google's features, and no guarantee exists that any assistant uses it.
- "Break everything into tiny chunks." Write clearly for people. Artificially fragmenting content does not help and can hurt readability.
- "AEO replaces SEO." It depends on SEO.
- "More content means more citations." Quality and usefulness matter more than volume.
- "AI-written pages are fine at scale." Mass-produced, unreviewed content is a spam risk.
A 30-day AEO sprint for a small business site
This sprint assumes a site with 5 to 15 important pages and one person with a few hours a week.
- 1
Days 1 to 3: baseline
Run an AEO analysis and a technical audit. Note the overall and area scores. Check indexing of key pages in Search Console. Write down the ten customer questions you most want to be found for.
- 2
Days 4 to 7: access and eligibility
Fix noindex, robots and snippet-restriction problems on key pages. Decide deliberately how each AI crawler is treated in robots.txt.
- 3
Days 8 to 14: rewrite the top five pages
Turn headings into questions, put a direct answer first, and add specifics: prices or ranges, timings, conditions and exceptions.
- 4
Days 15 to 20: trust signals
Add named authors with credentials, published and updated dates, sources for factual claims, and consistent business details.
- 5
Days 21 to 25: FAQs and structured data
Add real FAQs where customers need them. Add accurate Organization or LocalBusiness, Article and BreadcrumbList markup and validate it.
- 6
Days 26 to 30: measure
Re-run the AEO analysis, compare with the baseline, record Search Console impressions for the target queries and run your first spot check of AI answers for the ten questions.
AEO priorities by type of business
The same principles apply everywhere, but the highest-value questions differ.
| Business type | Typical high-value questions | Likely quick wins |
|---|---|---|
| Local service (plumber, dentist) | "How much does X cost in [city]?", "Do you offer emergency service?" | Pricing ranges, service-area pages, reviews, consistent profile details |
| E-commerce | "Which [product] is best for [need]?", sizing, delivery, returns | Buying guides, comparison tables, accurate product data, clear policies |
| B2B software | "What is [category]?", "A vs B", "How to do X with Y" | Definition pages, honest comparisons, documentation in crawlable HTML |
| Professional services | "Do I need a [professional] for X?", "How long does X take?" | Named expert authors, process explanations, fee transparency |
| Publishers | Topical explainers | Original reporting, clear sourcing, update dates |
Reporting AEO progress without overclaiming
Stakeholders will ask "are we in ChatGPT yet?". Prepare an honest answer in three layers:
- What we changed: pages rewritten, questions answered, authorship and dates added, markup validated.
- What we can measure reliably: AEO readiness scores, Search Console impressions and clicks for target queries, rankings including Google Maps.
- What we observed in AI products: a dated, small-sample spot check of a fixed question set, with the caveat that answers vary.
Never present a spot-check result as a ranking or a trend from a single check. A table with the date, product, question, whether you were mentioned and which sources were cited is a credible format.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to see results from AEO changes?
Readiness scores can change as soon as you republish and re-run the analysis. Search performance and any AI mentions take weeks to months, and are not guaranteed.
Should I create separate pages just for AI?
No. Improve the pages that serve your customers. Pages written only for machines tend to be thin and unhelpful.
What is the first thing to fix?
Make sure the pages you care about are indexed and snippet-eligible, then rewrite them answer-first.
What is answer engine optimization?
AEO is the practice of making content easy to understand, extract and attribute for search features, AI assistants and voice interfaces, by combining clear answers, trustworthy signals and sound technical SEO.
Is AEO different from SEO?
They overlap heavily. AEO emphasises direct, quotable answers, visible authorship and consistent information on top of SEO fundamentals.
Can I guarantee I will appear in AI answers?
No. You can improve eligibility and clarity; inclusion is decided by each product.
Do I need special markup for Google AI Overviews?
Google says no special optimisation is required; pages need to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and normal SEO best practices apply.
Does Bizsenti AutoSEO check if ChatGPT mentions me?
No. The AEO analysis audits your website's readiness. It does not query AI products.
Where should I start?
Make sure key pages are indexable, rewrite headings and openings to answer real customer questions directly, show authorship, cite sources, and run an AEO analysis for gaps.
