Why Your Website Is Not Appearing in AI-Generated Answers
If AI products never mention your site, the cause is usually one of a handful of fixable issues. Here is a diagnostic, in order of likelihood.
You asked an AI product a question your business should answer, and it named competitors, or nobody. Before assuming something exotic, work through this diagnostic. Most causes are mundane and fixable, and a few are simply outside your control.
First: set realistic expectations
AI answers vary, no one is cited for everything, and no vendor publishes selection rules. "Not appearing" for some questions is normal. The aim is to remove avoidable barriers and strengthen the signals you can control.
Diagnostic, in order of likelihood
1. The pages cannot be accessed
- robots.txt blocks crawlers you wanted (check each vendor's crawler).
- noindex or an X-Robots-Tag on key pages.
- Login walls, geo-blocks or aggressive bot protection.
- JavaScript-only content that is missing from the delivered HTML.
Check: Search Console URL Inspection, view-source on key pages, robots.txt, and a technical audit.
2. The pages are not indexed
If Google has not indexed the page, search-based AI features that rely on it cannot use it either. Look at the Page indexing report for "Crawled, currently not indexed" and "Discovered, currently not indexed".
3. The content does not answer the question
- Headings are vague or promotional.
- The answer is buried after long preamble.
- The page covers many topics lightly.
- It states opinions without specifics.
Fix: rewrite answer-first; one page per topic; add specifics. See how to structure website content.
4. Weak trust and accountability signals
No author, no date, no sources, no About or Contact details, inconsistent business facts. Fix: add them. Run an AEO analysis.
5. Thin reputation outside your site
If nobody else mentions you, there is little corroboration. Fix: earn reviews, press, partner mentions, directory listings that are genuinely relevant, and publish original material others reference.
6. Your competitors are simply stronger on this question
They may have clearer pages, more mentions or fresher content. Fix: study the pages that are cited and improve on them honestly.
7. The question is not one AI answers with sources
Some questions are answered from general knowledge without citing sites. You cannot do much about that.
Quick triage table
| Symptom | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Not in Google's index | Access or quality | Fix indexing |
| Indexed but never cited | Clarity or trust | Answer-first rewrite, add authorship |
| Cited for some questions, not others | Coverage gaps | Create or improve pages per question |
| Mentioned with wrong facts | Inconsistent or outdated sources | Fix your own pages and profiles |
| Competitors dominate | Reputation or depth | Study and improve; earn mentions |
What will not help
- Hidden text or prompts on your pages.
- Mass-produced AI pages.
- Buying "AI ranking" packages.
- Schema alone.
A 30-day recovery plan
- Week 1: fix access and indexing.
- Week 2: rewrite the 5 most important pages answer-first.
- Week 3: add authors, dates, sources, consistent facts.
- Week 4: set up monthly spot checks and mention monitoring.
A worked diagnosis
A dental clinic is never cited for "how much do dental implants cost in Leeds?".
- Access: the pricing page is indexed and not blocked. Pass.
- Answer: the page lists "from 1,500" with no conditions, and the heading is "Our implants". Fail: vague.
- Trust: no named dentist, no date. Fail.
- Reputation: few reviews mention implants. Weak.
- Competition: the cited pages give ranges by case type, name the surgeon and show the review date.
Plan: rewrite the page with a question heading, a range table by case type, the named dentist and date, add FAQs, and encourage patient reviews that mention treatments. Re-check in two months.
Order of operations
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
| Fix access and indexing | Days |
| Rewrite top pages | Weeks |
| Build mentions and reviews | Months |
| Measure and refine | Ongoing |
Be patient: the slowest part (reputation) is also the most durable.
FAQs
How long until I see a change? Weeks to months; there is no fixed timeline.
Should I block AI crawlers to protect content? That is your decision, but blocking search crawlers can keep you out of those products' results.
Does Bizsenti AutoSEO tell me why I am not cited? It identifies on-site readiness gaps; it cannot see inside AI products.
