How to Optimize Your Website for Google AI Overviews

Google documents what it takes to be linked in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Here is what that guidance says and the practical steps that follow from it.

Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode place a generated summary above or alongside search results, with links to the pages it used. Site owners want to be one of those links. The honest starting point is Google's own documentation, which is short and unglamorous. This article walks through it and turns it into a plan.

What Google says

From Google Search Central's guidance on AI features and your website:

  • To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
  • There are no additional technical requirements.
  • The same foundational SEO best practices apply: helpful, reliable, people-first content; good page experience; crawlable, indexable pages; structured data that matches visible content.
  • Existing snippet controls (nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, noindex) apply.
  • Traffic from AI features is included in overall Search performance reporting.

Google does not say that any special markup, file or format increases the likelihood of being linked.

Step 1: Verify eligibility

  1. In Search Console, run URL Inspection on your most important pages. Are they indexed?
  2. Check the Page indexing report for pages excluded by noindex, robots, canonicalisation or quality.
  3. Look for nosnippet or a very low max-snippet value on pages you want quoted.
  4. Confirm robots.txt does not block them.
  5. Run a technical SEO audit to catch template-level problems.

Step 2: Make answers easy to take

  • Phrase headings as real questions.
  • Put a direct answer in the first one or two sentences.
  • Add detail below: conditions, exceptions, examples.
  • Use tables for comparisons and numbered lists for processes where they genuinely help.

Step 3: Be demonstrably reliable

  • Name authors and their relevant experience.
  • Cite primary sources for factual claims.
  • Show when content was published and updated.
  • Correct errors visibly.

Step 4: Provide a good page experience

Fast, stable, mobile-friendly pages with readable layouts. Check Core Web Vitals in Search Console.

Step 5: Use structured data honestly

Add Organization or LocalBusiness, Article, BreadcrumbList, Product and similar types where accurate, and validate them. It helps machines understand pages; it is not a documented route into AI Overviews.

Step 6: Monitor

Watch impressions, clicks and queries in Search Console. Google reports AI feature traffic within overall Search performance, so you cannot isolate AI Overview mentions there. Spot-check a fixed list of queries periodically and record what you see.

  6. Fast on mobile?

Snippet-eligibleNo nosnippet; max-snippet not set very low
CrawlableNot blocked by robots.txt; content in HTML

What to do if you decide to limit AI use

Some publishers prefer to limit how content appears. Google documents snippet controls and the Google-Extended token; each has trade-offs. nosnippet and max-snippet affect how your pages are shown in ordinary Search as well as in AI features. Google-Extended relates to certain generative AI training uses and is documented as not affecting Search inclusion. Decide with the business side, read the current documentation and test.

Measuring over time

Create a simple monthly log: top 20 target queries, whether an AI Overview appears for each in your market, whether your site is linked, and clicks and impressions from Search Console. Appearance of AI features varies by user, so treat results as indicative.

FAQs

Can I guarantee inclusion? No.

Is there special schema for AI Overviews? No documented one.

Can I opt out? Snippet controls limit how content is shown in Search, including AI features; they also affect regular snippets, so read Google's documentation first.
