How to Improve Your Website's Visibility in ChatGPT

There is no ranking system to submit to, but ChatGPT can search the web and cite sources. Here is what is documented and what you can do.

"How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?" is now a common question, and it attracts a lot of confident nonsense. This guide sticks to what OpenAI documents and what follows logically.

How ChatGPT gets information from the web

ChatGPT answers draw on two broad sources: knowledge from its training (fixed at a point in time, usually without specific page citations) and web search, where ChatGPT searches for current information and can show an answer with links to sources.

OpenAI documents separate crawlers:

CrawlerDocumented purpose
OAI-SearchBotUsed to surface websites in ChatGPT search results
GPTBotUsed to collect content that may be used for training generative AI models
ChatGPT-UserUsed for certain user-initiated actions, such as visiting a page the user asks about

You control each through robots.txt. OpenAI states that sites that want to appear in ChatGPT search should not block OAI-SearchBot. Blocking GPTBot is a separate decision about training use. Read OpenAI's current documentation before editing robots.txt, because details change.

What you cannot control

  • Which sources ChatGPT chooses for a query.
  • How often you are cited.
  • The wording of answers.

There is no submission form, no ranking you can pay for, and no published list of ranking factors.

What you can control

1. Crawl access

Open your robots.txt. Make a deliberate decision about OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User, and make sure you have not blocked everything by accident.

2. Indexability and rendering

Key pages should return 200, not be set to noindex, and show important content in the delivered HTML.

3. Answer clarity

Use question-style headings and direct answers first. Be specific: numbers, names, conditions.

4. Evidence and credibility

Name authors, show dates, cite primary sources, and correct errors.

5. Consistent facts

Keep your business name, services, location and descriptions the same across your site and profiles.

6. Reputation

Earn mentions from relevant, reputable sites. Original data, guides and tools are what others cite.

A 30-day plan

WeekTask
1Audit robots.txt and indexability; fix blockers
2List 15 customer questions; rewrite top pages answer-first
3Add authors, dates and sources; fix inconsistent facts
4Create one original, citable resource; start monthly spot checks

How to spot-check

Pick 10 to 20 customer questions. Ask them in ChatGPT with search on, record whether your site is cited, which sources are, and the date. Repeat monthly with the same questions. Expect variation: one answer proves little.

Myths

  • "Submit your site to ChatGPT." There is no such process.
  • "Hidden text or prompts on your pages." Deceptive and unreliable.
  • "Paid placement packages." Nobody can guarantee placement.
  • "llms.txt gets you cited." It is a community proposal, not a commitment from OpenAI.

How to read a ChatGPT answer critically

When you spot-check, do more than note whether you appear.

  • Is the information about your business correct? If not, find the likely source and fix it.
  • Which sources are cited? Group them by type: your site, competitors, directories, news, forums.
  • What wording is used to describe you? It reveals what the web says about you.
  • What alternatives are suggested? It shows who you are compared with.

Building a corroborating footprint

AI products can weigh whether independent sources agree. Useful, honest footprints include:

  • a complete, accurate Google Business Profile and other relevant profiles;
  • reviews on reputable platforms;
  • mentions in trade press, associations and partner sites;
  • clear descriptions on your own About, service and contact pages;
  • consistent names, locations and services everywhere.

Avoid buying coverage or reviews. Authentic corroboration is slow and durable.

What to report to your team

A one-page monthly note: crawl settings and any changes, spot-check summary (dated, with the small-sample caveat), pages improved this month, mentions gained, and the next three actions. Do not report AI mentions as a ranking.

FAQs

Should I block GPTBot? That is your decision about training use; it is separate from search visibility.

Does Bizsenti AutoSEO track ChatGPT mentions? No. It improves and measures site-side signals; see AI visibility tracking.

Why does ChatGPT cite my competitor? Possibly clearer content, better indexing, stronger third-party coverage, or variation. Study the cited page.
