How to Get Your Business Recommended by AI Search Engines

AI assistants recommend businesses they can find, understand and trust. Here is what you can do about each of those, without promises nobody can keep.

When someone asks an AI assistant "who is a good [service] near me?" or "what is the best [product] for [need]?", the answer draws on what the product can find and trust about businesses like yours. You cannot buy a recommendation, but you can make your business easier to find, understand and trust.

What AI products tend to rely on

Exact behaviour is not published, but three kinds of inputs are consistently relevant:

  1. Your own site: crawlable, clear, specific content.
  2. Third-party sources: reviews, directories, news and other sites that describe you.
  3. Structured business data: profiles such as Google Business Profile and consistent listings.

Your goal is a coherent, credible picture across all three.

Step 1: Fix the foundations on your site

  • Make sure key pages are indexed and not blocked.
  • Describe each service clearly: what it is, who it is for, price ranges, how it works, where you operate.
  • Add About and Contact pages with real names and details.
  • Add accurate structured data (Organization or LocalBusiness).
  • Answer common customer questions directly. Run an AEO analysis to find gaps.

Step 2: Make your business data consistent

Your name, address, phone, hours, services and description should match across your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Inconsistency creates doubt, for people and for systems.

Step 3: Earn reviews and mentions

Recommendations often reflect reputation. Collect genuine reviews steadily, reply to them, and earn mentions from relevant sites: local press, industry associations, partners. Use brand mention discovery to find mentions that do not yet link to you.

Step 4: Publish expertise worth citing

  • Pricing guides with real ranges.
  • Original data you collected, with methodology.
  • Clear how-to content from practitioners.
  • Honest comparisons.

Never invent statistics or testimonials.

Step 5: Measure honestly

  • Search Console impressions and clicks.
  • Rankings, including Google Maps for local queries.
  • Review count and rating.
  • A fixed list of questions spot-checked in AI products monthly, recording dates and cited sources.

What not to do

TemptationWhy not
Buy a "guaranteed AI ranking"Nobody can guarantee it
Fake reviewsViolates policies and damages trust
Hidden instructions for AI on your pagesDeceptive and unreliable
Mass-generated location pagesThin, spammy and unhelpful

Local businesses: a specific checklist

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile.
  2. Keep details consistent everywhere.
  3. Build a review routine.
  4. Create genuinely local pages with real detail.
  5. Track Maps and organic rankings with the keyword rank tracker.

How "recommendation" differs by business type

Business typeWhat AI products tend to need to recommend youWhat to publish
Local serviceClear services and areas, reviews, consistent profileService-area pages, pricing ranges, review routine
Professional practiceCredentials and clear scopeNamed practitioners, qualifications, process pages
E-commerceAccurate product data and policiesSpecifications, sizing, delivery and returns pages
B2B softwareClear category, use cases and comparisonsUse-case pages, honest comparisons, documentation

Checking how you are described

Ask an AI product "What is [your business]?" and "Is [your business] good for [use]?". Compare the answer with your own description. Differences point to inconsistent or outdated sources. Fix your own pages first, then profiles you control, then reach out to third parties with errors.

Reviews: what to do and not do

  • Do collect genuine reviews from real customers on the platforms your customers use.
  • Do respond to reviews professionally.
  • Do not buy, trade or fabricate reviews.
  • Do not filter who you ask to inflate ratings.

FAQs

Can I pay to be recommended? Not legitimately.

Do reviews matter for AI recommendations? They influence reputation and local rankings, and are often visible to AI systems; no one outside the vendors knows the exact weighting.

How long does it take? Months. It is the same slow work as SEO.
