Competitors often rank for terms you have never considered. Finding them is a high-return research task. Here are five methods, from free to tool-assisted.

Method 1: Read the search results

Search your core keywords and look at the people-also-ask boxes, related searches and the titles of competing pages. Note recurring topics you do not cover. Do it for each target location and device.

Method 2: Study competitor pages

Open the competitor's key pages. List their headings, FAQs and related links. Check their sitemap (often at /sitemap.xml) to see the full list of topics they have published.

Method 3: Use Google Search Console for your own gaps

Search Console shows queries you already get impressions for. Queries with many impressions and poor positions indicate topics where you are visible but not competitive, a cheaper win than starting from scratch.

Method 4: Use a keyword research tool

Keyword research tools can show the keywords a domain ranks for. Bizsenti AutoSEO's keyword analysis provides volume, difficulty and related ideas for terms you enter, and its competitor tracking compares rankings for the keywords in your project. For bulk competitor keyword exports use a dataset-scale tool, then import chosen terms to track.

Method 5: Ask customers

Sales calls, support emails, reviews and onboarding questions reveal the words customers actually use, which keyword tools may miss.

Turn it into a plan

  1. List the qualified keywords.
  2. Map each to one page (template).
  3. Create or improve pages, answering the intent better than competitors.
  4. Track the keywords and review after a few weeks.

Pitfalls

  • Copying competitors' keyword lists wholesale.
  • Targeting terms unrelated to your offer.
  • Ignoring local variations.
  • Writing thinner pages than the ones already ranking.

Questions to ask about each discovered keyword

Do we serve it? Which page of ours would target it? Who ranks now, and can we realistically beat them with something more useful? Is it worth the effort compared with other tasks? If any answer is no, drop it.

Keep a research log

Record the date, source, keyword, intent, decision and reason. Over time it shows which sources produce winnable keywords for your business.

FAQs

Can I do this for free? Largely yes with search results, competitor sites and Search Console; tools speed it up.

How do I know a keyword is winnable? If smaller or similar sites rank on page one, it probably is.

Should I track every keyword I find? Only the ones you will act on.
